Book Illustration

Here is a small selection of work for various books.

Many of these plates (and others) are for sale, unframed, unmounted, postage included; contact me - timworfolk at gmail dot com.

I've worked on quite a few books over the years and still have a number of original plates for sale. If you're interested in buying an original from any of the books I've worked on, drop me a line, it may still be available.

Shrikes: A Guide to the Shrikes of the World. Lefranc & Worfolk, 1997. Pica Press.

Birds of the Indian Subcontinent. Grimmett, Inskipp & Inskipp. 1998. Helm.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Sri Lanka. Harrison & Worfolk. 1999, OUP.

A Field Guide to the Birds of South East Asia. Robson, 2000. New Holland.

Cuckoos of the World. Erritzøe et al 2012. Helm.

One of my first projects as a 'professional' illustrator was a Field Guide to the Birds of Sri Lanka, written by John Harrison. I don't like to look back at much of my earliest efforts, but this is one I'm still fairly satisfied with. I did a lot of the plates, like this, on coloured paper; I've never used it since.

Marsh Terns, Little and Saunders' Terns - Sri Lanka 23x33cm £300
A few years ago Oxford University Press asked us for a revised edition. Predictably they weren't happy to pay for me to repaint all the plates but I did get chance to update this one, including the newly discovered Serendib Scops Owl.

Small Owls, Frogmouth and Nightjars - Sri Lanka 23X33cm £350
Publishers always like to economise and if they can reuse illustrations, they will. When New Holland produced a Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo, written by Susan Myers, they took most of the figures from their South-east Asia guide by Craig Robson. Because I'd done many of the plates for that I was asked to paint a few new birds. These next pieces are not plates as such, the figures were cut and pasted in the book alongside my older work and I certainly noticed a difference in quality.

Nightjars, Frogmouths and Swifts - Borneo Not for sale

Next a couple of plates from the Helm Cuckoos monograph.

I mentioned elsewhere the sadly defunct China field guide project; here are a few plates that never saw the light of day.

Broadbills and Pittas - Birds of China Not for sale
Larks - Birds of China Not for sale

Next two of the shrike plates, which may be of interest. These are labelled as they might yet be used in an updated Shrikes of the World.

Smaller shrikes - Birds of China Not for sale
Last for now, a cover illustration for Avian Survivors by Clive Finlayson, these were designed to go on the spine.

  3. Hi Tim, I noticed your name is recorded as one of the illustrators for the Wildlife Guide Malaysia published in 2008 by New Holland Publishers. ISBN: 10987654321

I'm based in Sabah, Borneo & I am a Forest Ranger & Expedition Leader mainly operating in a variety of national parks and forest reserves in Sabah.

I'm impressed with the artwork shown at the rear of the book & I was wondering if there is anyway
i could request for the images, or indeed gain permission to use the
images, by creating a wildlife check list for specific parks in Sabah? Of
course credits would be given etc, i noticed a variety of artists
participated & i'd be grateful for any help you may give or suggest. I've been unable to find a way to contact you, therefore i thought i'd post here. Hope you don't mind.

  4. Hi there, congratulations for your work, it's really useful and makes identification really easy! I have seen some bird illustrations on the web labelled to your name, is this one yours too? http://fabioschunck.com.br/site/en/brazilian-portuguese-pesquisa/projetos/
If so, may I ask for the technique you used? Thanks and greetings from Chile!
